Tall Ships Sail to Bremerton

The Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain continue their summer 2011 tour of Puget Sound-area ports with a stop at Brownsville August 15 through August 21. The ships will bring their popular Battle Sails, plus an expanded series of value-priced Evening Sails, to the Port of Brownsville Marina at 9790 Ogle Road Northeast in Bremerton. They are scheduled to arrive the evening of August 15.

Evening Sails include demonstrations of tall ship handling, an opportunity to help the crew raise a sail, and a beautiful Puget Sound sunset. Battle Sails feature a recreation of a typical 18th century naval skirmish, complete with cannon fire using real gunpowder (but no cannon balls). Groups of eight or more for Battle Sails automatically receive a 15% per ticket discount at the time of purchase. Tickets are available online or by calling 800-200-5239. Are you raising money for a cause through a bake sale? Is your church putting on a Holiday musical?

Each week we receive numerous electronic requests to broadcast information about community events and organizations over the Megatalk airwaves. I am thrilled by the magnitude of responses that are flowing into the community@kitz1400.com inbox and I wanted to pass along some simple tips that will greatly enhance the chances of your information being aired on our stations as well as other media entities.

- Include an abstract text with the 5 w's in the body of your email, even when sending and attachment.

Most radio stations will be able to put this information into a script and cut and paste for web and social networking applications. The majority of the emails I receive go as follows, "Can you please broadcast information about our event coming up in November? (please see attachment)"

- Plan accordingly before your email blitz.

Utilizing online databases is an effective way to navigate the broadcast management hierarchy. In Washington, the WSAB (Washington Association of Broadcasters) directory lists the primary contact (including my name) at each media outlet. You can find it here. It certainly helps to address your email to a specific individual.

Last week we received a note requesting airtime the day before an event... Enough said!

Do not be intimidated by the idea of writing, voicing, and producing the PSA yourself. You do not have to sound like a jock, nor are expected to. Most of us in the media industry prefer a change and differing presenter to the voice over kings when airing community information. With home digital audio recording software and hardware readily available and affordable, compiling a :30 second or :60 mp3 can be done efficiently and effectively.

The defending state 4A Champions Skyline Spartans and quarterback Jake Heaps present a monumental challenge for South Kitsap in a first round playoff match-up at Mt. Tahoma High School Saturday. The 6th ranked Wolves drafted a solid effort last week, prevailing 38-21 in a preliminary round battle against Heritage of Vancouver.

Heaps, considered one of the top recruits nationally, made headlines earlier this year by choosing BYU over UW and culminating a fierce recruiting struggle. The Spartans have lost twice in 2009, yet the team is currently ranked #2 in the state.

A South Kitsap victory could create a possible Kitsap exclusive second round pairing. The winner of Saturday's game faces either Curtis or Central Kitsap.

Survey offers chance to win year of trash service

OLYMPIA –

Thurston County Solid Waste is conducting an on-line survey, in conjunction with Pacific Disposal/LeMay. As an incentive for participation, LeMay is offering an opportunity (through a drawing at the end of the survey) to win free residential garbage pick-up service for a year, based on the winner’s existing service level.

Staff is seeking ways to improve service and reduce customer costs by asking customers where they acquire information regarding solid waste, what services they would like to see offered, and exploration of the public perception of every other week trash pick-up (such as the city of Olympia has). Inserts were included in customers August and September garbage service billings with a link to the online survey.

Terri Thomas, an Outreach Specialist with the County pointed out the advantage of the on-line survey which was set up through SurveyMonkey for around two hundred dollars. All the results are computed by the system and a report generated. Past surveys were mailed out and results hand computed, costing several thousands of dollars in staff time. “It’s critical that we get feedback from residents but the County just can’t handle that kind of expense anymore” said Thomas. The one disadvantage is that customers that don’t have a computer cannot take the survey. The County could not have even done a survey using the old hand-count system and the hope is that residents without Internet access can use a computer at a friend’s, the library or work.

Several municipalities have had every-other-week collection for years with good results. However, the survey isn’t just about every-other-week service and there are currently no plans to change, according to Terri Thomas with Solid Waste. Before such a switch would even be explored, the County and the hauler wanted to see what the public thought about the idea. This is similar to the approach taken when the switch was made from the 3-bin recycling system to commingled. If the majority of the public isn’t behind the idea, based on this survey, there will be no further consideration. LeMay customers are encouraged to get online, take the survey, and provide their opinion.

Another question addresses glass collection. It is essential to keep the glass out of the other recyclables, but the added glass route does increase customer’s costs. The County and hauler wanted to see if residents would use community drop boxes or place glass in the trash if the curbside glass service was discontinued. There are no plans for this change so it is just an information-gathering question. Some municipalities do not have glass collection since it is costly to collect with little market value.

The survey is geared towards Thurston County curbside customers outside of Olympia. Olympia operates their own trash collection service while the rest of the County is managed by sub companies of LeMay. So if you don’t meet those criteria on question 1, you will be taken directly to the end. The survey runs through October 31, 2009.
